Sparrowk
Livestock is primarily a cow/calf and stocker operation,
headquartered in Central California. The calves from the cow heard,
which are not retained for breeding purposes, are moved to the stocker
enterprise. Additional stocker calves are purchased from throughout the
western states during the fall months for the California winter grass
season. During the spring months, these cattle are either moved to
feedlots or summer in Oregon.
Retained ownership and marketing flexibility has long been part of the
overall business plan. Thus depending on circumstances, ownership varies
from selling all or a portion of the cattle as they come off grass or
retaining ownership through the feedlot. In this manner the Sparrowk
operation spreads out marketing periods and allows for timely risk management
alternatives.
Most of the horses used on the ranches are bred
and raised by Sparrowk Livestock. Most horse colts are kept for
ranch work. The fillies which are not kept as ranch horses or
broodmare replacements are sold as weanlings or yearlings.
Sparrowk Livestock is actively seeking
opportunities to improve environmental conditions on its ranches. Current
projects include creek restoration and wildlife habitat enhancement on
ranches in California and Oregon.
As a permitee on US Forest Service allotments in
Oregon, Sparrowk Livestock works in cooperation with USFS to
monitor utilization and improve resources to ensure the health of the
forest and riparian areas within those allotments.
The Sparrowk operation has always endorsed the Beef Quality
Assurance concept. The California Cattlemens Association Quality
Assurance program, in cooperation with the University of
California at Davis, provides educational seminars for those working
with beef cattle. Members of the Sparrowk ranch crews have
attended these programs and practice Beef Quality Assurance in their everyday beef cattle management.
